Five Obstacles that Can Hinder You from Seeking Counseling

Audio Version

Nobody is perfect. Even the most successful people have their own share of challenges and difficulties. What we see from the outside looking in doesn’t always show an accurate picture of what is going on for someone. Despite this, we generally assume that others are doing far better than we are.

You are not the only one facing challenges and struggles. There is nothing wrong with you if you find that you are needing help. Counseling can help you to address what isn’t going the way you would like in your life. You can feel better and start feeling more effective in your day to day.

Unfortunately, there are things that can get in the way of getting the help you need and deserve. Don’t let roadblocks keep you from reaching out.

Potential Roadblocks to Starting Counseling

1. Not knowing where to start. You may know that counseling is beneficial, but not know where to begin your search for a reputable therapist. There are SO many choices out there, it’s natural to be a bit confused. Finding a trustworthy practice can be a great place to start. CCS has been serving our community for over 30 years. There are many contracted therapists to choose from which may feel overwhelming, however, our caring Scheduling Team can help narrow your search.

2. Fear of reliving painful life events. It can be hard to open up and trust someone you don’t know. It can be even more difficult if you worry that person will make you talk about and even relive painful memories. Therapy can be overwhelming and it can be remarkably helpful. It is true that some things feel worse before they feel better. Don’t lose sight of the better part. Counseling can be taken at your own pace and you will not be forced to talk about things before you are ready when you find the therapist that is right for you.

3. The power of negative thoughts. Depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions can change the way you think about yourself and the world around you. You may be in a place where you feel as if you are doomed and nothing can help you to feel better. This can keep you from seeking out counseling. Don’t let this type of thinking keep you from getting the treatment that you need and deserve. You can feel better, therapy can help.

4. The advice of others. Friends and family can be wonderful supports, though they don’t replace trained, licensed professionals. You can reach out to those around you for support AND go to counseling. They aren’t mutually exclusive. This can be difficult if you come from a family that “doesn’t believe in therapy”. There can be many benefits from counseling and as you begin to feel better you could even inspire those around you to seek therapy for themselves. When you begin to feel better it can be an inspiration to others. Don’t let the opinions of others keep you from getting help when you need it.

5. Life is busy. It can be difficult to find time for yourself. This can make going to counseling challenging. You deserve to focus on taking care of yourself, therapy can be a large piece of this. Online counseling can make getting the treatment you need and deserve easier than ever before. Don’t put yourself on a shelf, regardless of how busy you are!
